Importance of physical activity in the Third Age

Every day the elderly lose some of their physical abilities and gain a higher risk of complications from inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle. This can result in your body are deteriorating as part of the natural ageing process.

The ageing process can not be avoided but it surely can be delayed. Regular physical activity can reduce its effects and, therefore, improve the quality of life of older adults. It is advisable to perform at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days a week.

Physical activity is essential to stay healthy!

Exercise is not just for those who are in good health, nor is it just for young people. Regular physical activity is a good disease prevention system and, above all, a treatment to them.

People with cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases such as asthma, diabetes or obesity, among others, are those that clearly benefit from performing regular physical training. There are so many benefits of an active lifestyle for the elderly as they can help improve:

  • Balance
  • Strength
  • Coordinate movements
  • Flexibility
  • Resistance
  • Avoid the risk of falls
  • Physical appearance
  • Self esteem
  • Memory
  • Avoid depression and anxiety

However, there are some specific considerations regarding the recommendations of physical activity for older people:

  • The intensity of aerobic activities should take into account the physical condition of each person.
  • Activities that maintain or increase flexibility are recommended.
